I finished Mass Effect tonight. Not just the third game in the trilogy, but the trilogy itself. The essence of what Mass Effect has meant to me for the last five years, ever since I became enamored with the first game in 2007.

Yesterday was not only Valentine’s Day, but also the release date of the Mass Effect 3 demo. This story-driven sci-fi action/adventure opus hooked me with the first of three games in late 2007, and the full version of the third and concluding installment hits retail shelves on March 6th of this year.

I’m completely enthralled by Mass Effect, the new sci-fi adventure game for the Xbox 360. It’s simply one of the most engaging single-player experiences to hit the Xbox this year, along with BioShock. But while the game is all kinds of excellent, it tends to leave a somewhat nasty aftertaste when it hits you with its idiotic auto-save system (or lack thereof) and a couple of other minor, but recurring, irritations.
